Precision and innovation have always been a part of the iMac story. Bringing the Retina 5K display to the 27-inch iMac was no different. It meant making incredible leaps in design at every level — from reengineering the brains of the display to maintaining 1/100th of a micron tolerances within the display cell. Not to mention fitting four times as many pixels — and the power to drive them — inside. All without compromising the amazingly thin iMac design.

As thin as before. More brilliant than ever.
The first iMac was a revolution: An all-in-one computer that put everything — display, processor, graphics, storage, memory, and more — inside one simple, stylish enclosure. Today iMac includes the most advanced, most brilliant desktop display we’ve ever built, and it’s filled with the latest high-performance technologies. Yet it’s still just 5 mm thin at its edge. Seamless design. One of the biggest challenges our engineers faced with the iMac enclosure was how to join the front to the back. The enclosure is so thin, it’s not possible to weld the pieces using traditional methods. So we searched far and wide for other ideas, and we found one in a process called friction-stir welding. It’s commonly used on airplane wings, rocket booster tanks, and other parts that simply can’t fail. This process uses a combination of intense friction-generated heat and pressure to intermix the molecules of the two aluminum surfaces — creating a seamless, precise, and superstrong join. You may not see it, but this iMac wouldn’t be possible without it.

Visually astounding power.
The latest AMD graphics. All the pixels in the world won’t do you any good if you can’t quickly and efficiently command them into action. That’s why iMac with Retina 5K display features the latest AMD high-performance graphics — with up to 3.5 teraflops of graphics compute power. So you experience stunning motion graphics, jaw-dropping visual effects, and 3D graphics so true to life that you’ll feel like you’re part of the action.

Orchestrating the performance of 14.7 million pixels.
A more advanced timing controller. The timing controller, or “TCON,” is the brains of the display — it tells each pixel what to do and when to do it. Because iMac with Retina 5K display has four times as many pixels as the standard 27-inch iMac display, the TCON had to be able to handle more information than ever. But even the most powerful timing controllers available couldn’t manage this number of pixels, so we had to create a new one with four times the bandwidth of the previous-generation 27-inch iMac — up to 40 Gbps. Now a single supercharged chip beautifully orchestrates the symphony of all 14.7 million pixels.

The power is in the details.
It’s amazing that so many pixels fit inside an all-in-one that’s just 5 mm at its edge. But it’s even more amazing when you consider all the power packed into iMac with Retina 5K display.

Fourth-generation Intel Core processors.
With a quad-core Intel Core i5 processor at up to 3.5GHz — and up to 4.0GHz with the Intel Core i7 processor — this is the fastest iMac yet. And since OS X is designed to take advantage of each core, iMac captures every bit of performance from the processor. Turbo Boost 2.0, which comes standard on iMac with Retina 5K display, gives you an automatic increase in speed when you’re using a processor-intensive application like Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro. And by shifting core frequency in small increments, Turbo Boost allows the processor to manage performance without sacrificing efficiency. All this takes place behind the scenes, so your work — and play — goes smoother and faster.
